PHYLLIS STEIN ART

Please check out my friends lovely/NEW/downtown/ art gallery - Phyllis Stein

ABOUT PHYLLIS STEIN ART:

Phyllis Stein Art is a fine art gallery focusing on emerging artists. It is a mission of PSA to provide resources and educational programs through which artists may hone their practice in hopes of creating a dialogue and community that supports a spectrum of artistic expression. The gallery functions as a venue for radical performance work as well as the more sedate facets of art. PSA is currently developing an internship program through which art-hungry youths may get their proverbial feet wet in a gay-old gallery environment.

Opening Reception: July 10, 7-11pm

LOS ANGELES, June 19, 2008 -- Phyllis Stein Art is pleased to announce the opening of its inaugural gallery exhibition in conjunction with the Downtown Arts Walk on July 10, 2008.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

Eric Smail: Press 1 for English
Exploring the geometry of semiotics in a technological age, Eric Smail’s boldly-colored complex paper sculptures and 2D patterned installations create a provocative and futuristic architecture.

Jesse Chapo: Stateside
Jesse Chapo’s new works, paintings and sculptures of bright and fantastical creatures, touch upon themes of American ideas, values and customs. Reminiscent of Heinz Edelmann or Milton Glaser, but with a confidence and style completely his own, Chapo’s work is both playful and compelling.

www.phyllissteinart.com

207 W 5th Street in the Spring Arts Tower,
PSA is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am-6pm and by appointment.
213-622-6012.

EAMES Stamps

The USPS 2008 stamp collection includes a set in recognition of design duo Eames.

Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912–1988) Eames were American designers who made major contributions in many fields of design including industrial design, furniture design, art, graphic design, film and architecture.

Their iconic status is due to their ability to introduce new materials, new shapes, and technology to the American masses. After WWII and into the mid 20th century, Charles & Ray Eames invented products that defined the mood of the American public...There was a social obsession with 'the future', technology, color, and playfulness that was born out of being in years of war. In a sense, Charles & Ray Eames became the voice of a new generation.

Most of the Eames furniture collection is still in production. You can find the famed Eames lounge chair and ottoman and much more at www.hemanmiller.com

New Superpowers Flags

Just saw this @ www.publicworks.org.uk

"A set of flags that express more accurately the natures of the world's existent, up-and-coming, and new superpowers:
Russia's stranglehold on oil and gas lines; Britain's CCTV obsession; Canada's huge, currently untapped oil reserves; China's peerless manufacturing ability; Brazil's potential as the first non-nuclear superpower; Japan's ever-expanding workforce; America's insidious consumerist introductions; and India's massive industrial development."

-S

SYI: I try to avoid politics on this blog, but I thought that the design aspect of this project trumped political lines.

Empty Orchestra

I've always been fascinated with karaoke in America. I mean, strangers gathering in dark rooms to sing their favorite guilty pleasures?! I feel like there's a profound story behind the type of individuals who become regulars at karaoke bars.
I see a documetary. At the least, I see an idea for a photo exhibition.

The idea is to snap random lines on the screen at karaoke bars (just as I have done above), and let the photos speak for themselves.

Maybe I could even do a seperate blog where people from all over could submit shots of their favorite karaoke lines.

The blog could supplement the documentary.

The doc would be called EMPTY ORCHESTRA (karaoke translated).

Holy Ghost!

FRIDAYS=MUSIC

On fridays, I like to share a selection from my personal collection.

Here's how the story goes:
About a month ago, my friend Bil (w/ one l) gave me the sickest DJ mix ever. I instantly fell in love with it, and with one song specifically. It's Called 'Hold On' by Holy Ghost!

Holy Ghost is Nicholas Millhiser and Alexander Frankel, and it was produced by DFA records... who, by the way, is single handedly producing everything good right now (Hercules & Love Affair, Hot Chip, Still Going, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem).

'Hold On' just has this sexy ease to it...the synths are simple yet sophisticated (which is not as easy as it sounds)...and it's pretty lyrically driven too ("Why do the good things happen in the past / Streamline the news and trim the fat / I love the city but I hate my job / And this old city loves me back".)

I love,

On Sat, some friends and I had dinner at the courtyard brasserie @ Palihouse. The vibe, the food, the drinks, the background music... all excellent! What a lovely addition to West Hollywood... I'm totally digging Palihouse.

check out www.palihouse.com to learn more about this new "boutique urban lodge".

SYI: The Crème brûlée was stellar... so creamy. A small portion, so please don't share it.

Eve Salvail

When I was just a young lad, my favorite shows were Fashion Television w/ host Jeanne Beker & House of Style w/ Cindy Crawford.

I can seriously remember being glued to the screen when these shows came on. For me, some of the best moments were the interviews with the models. It was always pretty awesome to see backstage at a fashion show (hair, makeup, etc...) I guess in a way, it was reality television before the term even existed. One particular interview stayed in my memory bank forever -- I have it here today for your viewing pleasure.

Before there was Gisele, Heidi, Karolina Kurkova, and now Agyness Deyn, the "it girl" of the early 1990's was Eve Salvail. In a special moment in time, the fashion world went gaga over this bald-headed beauty. The snip below is from an interview with Eve on House of Style (probably circa 1991).

As a kid, I was so inspired by Eve... she was just so cool... she was androgynous (always a plus), eccentric, and even kinda profound.

I heard that she's a big D.J. in NYC nowadays... I wonder if she's still bald? I wonder if she's thinking about making a comeback in modeling... I mean with 90's fashion coming back into vogue, it just makes sense for some design house to find her and make her their muse.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Hedi Slimane Photography

Hedi Slimane, former head of Dior Homme, is an amazing photographer.

As you may know, Hedi is responsible for launching the skinny jean and new proportions in tailoring in the latest rock movement in fashion. Now with his photo collection, you can see how his personal interest with the British indie-rock scene inspires his design aesthetic.

There are about 1000 large black-and-white shots to check out on Hedi's personal website:

eBOY | Pixel Art

eBoy ("Godfathers of Pixel") is Steffen Sauerteig, Svend Smital, & Kai Vermehr. Founded in 1998, eBOY is the most well known of the current PIXEL ART movement.

As a product of the 1980's, I totally understand where they're coming from (totally). The idea is to express their art as an extension of their childhood. Their influences come from: "Pop culture... shopping, supermarkets, TV, toy commercials, LEGO, computer games, the news, magazines..." To me, their art is a lovely bi-product of years of chronic Nintendo playing (the original Nintendo of course).

"We started working with pixels because we loved the idea of making pictures only for the screen. It’s the best way to get really sharp and clean looking results. Also, handling pixels is fun and you are forced to simplify and abstract things, which is a big advantage of this technique."

eBOY's bread and butter is their city images collection. The most famous piece is the London Poster. Since London, they have created city images of New York, Paris, Berlin, Cologne, & Tokyo. Most importantly of course is their LATEST poster for Los Angeles (see last photo below).

check out shop.eboy.com to see the city images posters, as well as eBOY's complete portfolio.

The High Life

Please add this to the list of WHY NEW YORK ROCKS!

Friends of the High Line is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and reuse of the High Line - an abandoned 1.5 mile elevated railway (of the former elevated freight railroad) that runs along the West Side of Manhattan. The High Line was built in the early 1930s by the New York Central and has been unused by freight service since 1980.

Presently, there are plans to turn the High Line into an elevated park or greenway, similar to the Promenade Plantée in Paris. In 2004, the New York City government committed $50 million to establish the proposed park.

As of 2007, Hotel developer Andre Balazs, owner of the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, is building a 337-room hotel straddling the High Line at Little West 12th Street.

This is the kind of stuff I love to see...transformation.
