Lykke Li "Little Bit"

I just got wind of Lykke Li from my friend Gaza D.

In a time when record companies are throwing millions to make "high concept" music videos, it's refreshing to see a video like that of new artist Lykke Li's. The song's called "Little Bit", and I'm a little bit in love with it at the moment. Those Swedes sure know how to crank out talent with originality (must be something in the meatballs).

I'm not sure what the tech term is for this, but the "fast slow-motion" effect of the video is the best part... look out for it. There's a bit of tecktonik dancing in there too (for those who remember my blog about the dance style).

Have fun,

Wayne White & Ed Ruscha

I've been digging Wayne White's work ever since I saw a painting of his hanging at Fred62 in Los Feliz. He takes, cheaply mass produced lithogaphs from thrift stores and painstakingly writes bold typefaces on them in a glossy 3-D style.

The works are very kitschy of course, but I like to think that there's something extra wonderful about the opportunity White envisioned when he began this collection. To recycle neglected art in this way is something I totally respect.

Specifically, what I love about White's works is the similarities to earlier works of Ed Ruscha.

SYI: Wayne White worked as a set designer for Pee Wee's Playhouse, for which he won an Emmy. He has also done the art direction on two seminal music videos, Peter Gabriel's Big Time in 1986 for which he won a Billboard award for best Art Direction in a music video. In 1996 he designed all the Georges Méliès inspired sets for the award winning video for the Smashing Pumpkins, Tonight, Tonight.

Róisín Murphy

If I could come back to Earth as a woman, I'd like to be Róisín Murphy!

The former lead singer of Moloko, Róisín turned solo in 2004. Her sophmore solo album, "Overpowered", is an obsession right now.

Her voice-check, her style-check,... there's a new diva in town!

Fav tracks: "Overpowered", "Tell Everybody", "Dear Miami", "You Know Me Better", & "Primitive".

SYI - Róisín is pronounced (roy-sheen)

Tecktonic Comes To America

Tecktonik (AKA "Wantek") is a form of dance that first appeared in Paris in 2000 in a nightclub called Metropolis.

Tecknonic dance borrows heavily from elements of hip-hop dance moves including popping and locking, not to mention hints of vogueing as well.

Tecktonic has been growing in popularity worldwide, and lately you can start seeing the dance taking over in the states (LA & NY more so).

One of the most notable musicians for Tecktonic dance is YELLE. Check out the video for their song...(it's more of an art piece for tecktonik).

It's pretty exciting to see kids expressing themselves thru dance.

Sébastien Tellier: Sexuality

THE PERFECT SOUNDTRACK FOR A NITE DRIVE WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE.

Frenchman Sebastien Tellier has just released his third studio album ‘Sexuality’ on February 25th 2008, which has been jointly produced with Guy Manuel De Homem-Christo (Daft Punk). This is Homen-Christo’s first full artist project outside of Daft Punk, and it's very, very good!

'Sexuality' is groundbreaking. The sounds are futuristic, yet nostalgic... To me it's like listening to the future, as if the future were in the past. Does that make sense?

M.I.A. for Marc Jacobs

Have you seen the new Marc Jacobs ads? Marc's latest ad campaign (spring/summer 08) features my favorite Sri Lankin diva, M.I.A.

I'm happy to see her branch out in this way...Some might say that's she's on her way to selling out, but I think she's more importantly representing for an ethnic minority rarely seen in western fashion mags. Plus, the whole androgynous thing never gets old with me.

Love it!

Duran Duranberlake?!

What do you get when you mix 1part 80's new-wave icons w/ 2parts collaborative duo Justin Timberlake & Timbaland? ... you get Duran Duran's latest studio album,"Red Carpet Massacre".

"Red Carpet Massacre" is an unapologetic-dancefloor ready album that will no doubt surprise every Duran Duran fan out there. Think "Girls on Film" mashed up with "Promiscuous Girl".

Taking a leap into a new direction, the album sounds quintessentially Timbaland...very urban-electro with heavy beats and synthesized sounds.

Check out the track "Nite-Runner" (which also features Timberlake on vocals). I'm also recommending a listen of the track "The Valley". It's a standout song in that it most authentically combines everything we love about Timbaland without overpowering the Duran Duran sound...(those who love Timbaland know that the man tends to overproduce his projects..."feeky-feeky").

My intuition is telling me that "Red Carpet Massacre" may not be well received by the masses, as it walks a fine line between creation vs.commerce. But whatever the case may be, music snobs can't deny that the album is fun to listen to.
I'm curious to know...what do you think?

Once

If this movie doesn't move you, we can't be friends. On the flip side, I think that's why my bf Jessy and I are friends.

The soundtrack stands on its own as well. "If You Want Me" & "All the Way Down" are my favorite tracks, and they're on Itunes for your listening pleasure.

Once is a 2006 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (of popular Irish rock band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová as fictional struggling musicians. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and/or Irglová composed and performed all but one of the original songs in the movie. wikipedia.org

Quick quote: Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg was quoted as saying "A little movie called Once gave me enough inspiration to last the rest of the year."
