Style: Gianni Agnelli

Gianni Agnelli (1921-2003), was an Italian industrialist and principal shareholder of Fiat. As a public figure, Agnelli is also known worldwide for his impeccable, slightly eccentric fashion sense, which has influenced both Italian and international men’s fashion.

Gianni Agnelli based his style on a spectacular line of bespoke Caraceni suits and oft-imitated personal tricks. He wore his wristwatch over his cuff, wore his tie askew, and sported high brown hiking boots under a bespoke suit to suggest sprezzatura -- the Italian art of appearing not to care about one's appearance -- and to disconcert rivals. It worked.

Mr. Agnelli’s fashion sense stood out, even in a country like Italy, where dressing well and fashionably is generally perceived as very important. His style has inspired and influenced menswear throughout the years, in Italy and around the world. In his retirement speech, Milanese fashion designer Nino Cerruti named Agnelli as one of his biggest inspirations, amongst James Bond and John F. Kennedy

Valentino: The Last Emperor

VALENTINO THE LAST EMPEROR is a feature-length film on the legendary designer Valentino Garavani in the wake of his exit in 2008 from the company he founded in Rome more than 45 years ago. Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, the film is an intimate, engaging and very funny fly-on-the-wall exploration of the singular world of one of Italy's richest and most famous men. The film documents the colorful and dramatic closing act of Valentino’s celebrated career, tells the story of his extraordinary life and work, and also explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today. But at the heart of the film is the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.

4th Street District. Long Beach, CA

Jack & I cruised on over to the 4th Street shopping district in Long Beach today.

4th street district is merely a block long (located between Cherry & Junipero), but it is jam packed with vintage furniture stores, collectible thrift shops, and unique used clothing stores themed by era.

Particularly, vintage furniture aficionados will love stores like Xcape, Deja Vu, and Ruum. These small shops feel less like a retail experience and more like a well curated gallery of design.

American modern, Danish modern, and Heywood Wakefield - go to Xcape

Art-Deco, Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavia - go to Deja Vu

20th century decorative arts - go to Ruum

If you got the time and you love design, I think you'll really enjoy a day trip to the 4th street district. A wonderful secret, uncovered.

Fashion Bears

Costello Tagliapietra/ RTW Fall 2009

Known for their delicate draping and pleating, this season Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra applied their techniques not only to jersey dresses, but also to Ultrasuede.

I think "Fashion Bears" are my favorite type of bear.

Floored By Fashion

Tribal Diamond - Diane Von Furstenberg

VW Flag - Vivienne Westwood

I have to say, one of my favorite things are unexpected alignments from various areas of the design industry. Particularly, I love the crossroad where the fashion and interior design world meet. Case in point, The Rug Company's partnerships with iconic fashion designers Diane Von Furstenberg and Vivienne Westwood (photos above).

Check out The Rug Company for a visual feast of beautiful rugs by other iconic designers such as Marni, Paul Smith, & Kelly Wearstler, to name a few.

YSL's Art Auction

One of the most anticipated events on the 2009 auction calendar is undoubtedly the Yves Saint Laurent / Pierre BergĂ© sale, slated for Christie's in February. The private collection, amassed by the legendary fashion designer and his partner over the last fifty years, is exceptional as much for its quality and sheer size – more than 700 eclectic works in total (included are paintings by Picasso, Goya and Mondrian), estimated at well over €200 million.

As for its veiled exclusivity, unseen for decades by anyone outside the pair's private circle. Until now that is.

Housed in Saint Laurent's Paris apartment above the rue de Babylone, we've been allowed a peek inside to preview the works in their original setting and get a rare glimpse inside the late designer's home.

Check out Wallpaper to see a photo slide show of YSL's apartment and art.
